Comprehensive Immigration Reform March in Washington, D.C. 3/21/2010

People from our parish, other parishes in the Archdiocese and from faith and immigrant communities across Connecticut will be traveling together by motor coaches to the Nation’s Capitol on Saturday March 20 for a huge demonstration in support of comprehensive immigration reform proposals now being prepared in Congress.

These proposals are based on the key principles of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops’ “Justice for Immigrants” (JFI) Campaign emphasizing family reunification, fair enforcement of laws, a path to legalization and protections for all workers.

Our buses will be leaving from a nearby location Saturday by mid-morning and returning late Sunday night, with an affordable overnight stay in or near Washington, D.C. In addition to an interfaith prayer vigil, march and rally at the Lincoln Memorial, there will be time for mass and some sightseeing. The estimated cost is about $50 per person for bus and motel (double occupancy) plus meals. On January 22, 2009 St. Joseph Church hosted an informational evening on the issue of immigration in our country and how this relates to Catholic Social Justice Teachings. The Presentation was presented by The Office of Urban Affairs in the Archdiocese of Hartford and United Action of Central Connecticut. 36 people were in attendance from our community.

(By providing education on these issues we live out our mission statement by promoting peace and justice in all areas of life.)

United Action of Connecticut traveled to Washington DC to participate in “Realizing the Promise: A Forum on Community Faith and Democracy” on Thursday, December 4^th

Historic gathering that brought together grassroots leaders,

members of the new administration and Congress

Members of United Action of Connecticut traveled to Washington DC on Thursday, December 4 to join 2,000 community leaders from across the country at “Realizing the Promise: A Forum on Community, Faith and Democracy.” The forum provided grassroots leaders, everyday people, members of the new administration and Congress with an opportunity to sit down and discuss issues facing our nation and the solutions needed to make America work for all of us.

“Realizing the Promise” is an extension of the Heartland Presidential Forum held on December 1, 2007, in which then-Sen. Barack Obama pledged that grassroots leaders would help shape his agenda as president. The forum featured two roundtable discussions moderated by Juan Williams, noted journalist and news analyst for National Public Radio. These roundtables provided a setting for real dialogue between community and faith leaders, members of Congress and representatives of the incoming administration about the issues facing everyday Americans, including the economy, jobs, health care, immigration and the environment.
